Parry Mechanics
The parry is the central mechanic of Perfect Parries. It rewards precise timing with complete damage negation, reflected damage, and powerful follow-up opportunities.
All values mentioned on this page can be adjusted in-game. Use /parrymodsettings to configure them.
The Parry Window
When you start blocking, a parry window opens. By default, this window lasts 200ms from the moment you begin holding block, but it can be overridden per-weapon in the configuration. If an attack connects during this window, a perfect parry triggers.
Parry Reticle
When enabled, a brief parry reticle appears on your HUD to indicate you're inside the parry window. This gives visual feedback so you can learn the timing.
What Happens on Parry
A successful perfect parry triggers all of the following (many of which are configurable per-weapon):
| Effect | Details |
|---|---|
| Damage negation | Incoming damage is completely negated; just like a normal block |
| Damage reflection | A percentage of the incoming damage is dealt back to the attacker (15% by default) |
| Knockback | The attacker is knocked back (horizontal and vertical force of 5 by default) |
| Particle effect | A parry particle effect spawns at the hit location |
| Sound effect | A material-appropriate sound plays (shield/metallic/non-metallic) |
| Animation | A weapon-specific parry animation plays on the defender |
| Signature energy | Energy is granted toward your weapon's signature attack |
| No stamina drain | The defender loses no stamina |
| No durability loss | The blocking item takes no durability damage; just like a normal block |
Unparryable Attacks
Some powerful attacks or boss mechanics may be marked as Unparryable. These attacks will bypass your parry window entirely, dealing full damage even if your timing is perfect. The indicator of these attacks is determined by the creator of the boss/entity mod.
Protective Windows
After a successful parry, two protective windows activate to prevent you from being overwhelmed:
Auto-Parry Window
For 150ms after a successful parry, any subsequent hits from the same entity are automatically parried. This prevents multi-hit attacks from punishing you after a well-timed parry due to Hytale's built-in block limitations.
Grace Period
For 150ms after the auto-parry window, all incoming damage is cancelled regardless of its source. This prevents weird/unregistered damage from accidentally passing through.
Block Spam Prevention
To prevent players from rapidly toggling block to fish for parries, there is a cooldown between block attempts of 500ms.
If you release block and try to block again within the cooldown period, the new block won't open a parry window.
Signature Energy
Each successful parry grants energy toward your weapon's signature attack. It takes 5 parries to fully charge a signature. Individual weapons can override how much energy they grant per parry.
